What cleaning method do you use?

Our cleaning is done by professionals certified by the IICRC, using truck-mounted hot-water extraction, commonly referred to as "Steam Cleaning".

Which cleaning method is best?

There are 3 carpet cleaning methods: Hot water extraction, Dry cleaning & Shampooing.1. Hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is a combination of hot water, high pressure, and a powerful vacuum to remove dirt & harmful pollutants from your carpet. High pressure shoots cleaning solutions to the base of your carpet fibers to loosen soils & pollutants. The powerful vacuum and hot water rinse out dirt, grease, grime, pollens, and environmental pollutants from your carpet. This rinsing step is very important. You would never shower, put shampoo in your hair, and then just let it dry! The shampoo needs to be rinsed out, and the cleaning solutions in your carpet need to be rinsed out or you'll be left with a residue that attracts dirt like a magnet. And rinsing with hot water also sanitizes your carpet by killing dust mites and bacteria. In our process we also neutralize the carpets to the correct pH which is important because it eliminates resoiling. This is the only method recommended by Shaw Industries, the world's largest carpet manufacturer and the #1 recommended method for cleaning carpets. . It is the most preferred method by all of the major fiber producers, such as DuPont, Monsanto and Allied Signal, as well as the carpet manufacturers like, Shaw, Mohawk, World, and Queen. Because this method removes more contaminants than the other carpet cleaning methods, hot water extraction is favored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is the preferred method of the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Most higher quality carpets that have extended appearance and texture retention warranties require this type of cleaning every 18 months in order to retain the warranty coverage. NOT ALL HOT WATER EXTRACTION MACHINES ARE EQUAL. There are 3 basic types: 1) Truck mounted units (what we use). These machines have large independent engines or run off the motor of the cleaning van. They can develop up to 1000 pounds of pressure (though normally carpet is cleaned at only 500 lbs of pressure). They also heat the water to 200 or more degrees and have very powerful vacuums. These machines also vary. Some carpets cleaners use a very inexpensive, low power unit that does not heat or extract water to the degree needed for proper cleaning. A correct machine is expensive but will leave the carpets drier and much cleaner when used properly. 2) Professional portables. These machines are more powerful than the residential/rental but not as powerful as the truck mounted units. The number and size of vacuum motors and pumps in one of these units plus heat exchangers differentiates one from another in terms of performance. A good job can be done with a good unit and if the operator has excellent training and takes his or her time. Sometimes portables are the only way the carpets can be cleaned in some locations. 3) Residential/Rental. These lack the power needed to do the deep cleaning required to get out the grit that lies deep in your carpet pile and to maintain carpet manufacturer warranties. They also do not have the vacuum suction ability to remove and rinse the solutions, leaving your carpet as a magnet for more dirt.2. Dry Cleaning: There are 3 dry cleaning methods: 1) Dry Foam - This method relies on the aggressiveness of the brushing action, which is usually counter rotating cylindrical brushes. The solution is whipped into a foam and applied right before the brushes. 2) Dry compound/dry powder In this method a dry product (powder or ground corn cobs that have been soaked with a solvent chemical) is broadcast over the area to be cleaned. Then either a circular brush or a cylindrical rotating brush is used to force the dry cleaning product in contact with the soil. 3) Bonnet - sometimes referred to as 'Dry Cleaning', the cleaning product (sometimes mixed with carbonated water) is misted onto the carpet in the form of a spray, than circular rotating buffer with an absorbent pad attached is run over the carpet. The soil attaches itself to the pad and the pad is changed with a clean one after becoming dirty. These dry methods clean the top 1/3 of the fiber that is visible, it does very little to remove the heavier soils in the base of the fibers. Its weakness is also the extraction cycle, the extraction of dirt and chemicals are left to your vacuuming. If not vacuumed with a powerful commercial vacuum, large amounts of the cleaning product can remain, act as a magnet for dirt and over a period of time build up and cause considerable problems.3. Shampooing is the oldest form of cleaning. It is the use of a motorized circular brush in which foaming cleaning products are introduced to the surface of the carpet and are then scrubbed into the carpet. This method has very good agitation and is best suited for low pile commercial carpet or low cut pile carpet that is highly soiled. This method, unless it is used with some other type of carpet cleaning, has no extraction in the cleaning process but rather relies on vacuuming after the shampoo dries. Because of its high aggressiveness, and the large amounts of cleaning product residue it leaves, this method is not recommended for most cut pile residential carpet. It also can have long drying times associated with it.

Does wet cleaning carpets will cause mold?

The moisture left in your carpet after your cleaning will not harm your carpet. Companies will try to scare you with mold and mildew growth but there are no risks in even heavily saturated carpets being dry in less than 48 hours. Our trained professionals know how to clean to keep dry time under 6 hours for normally soiled carpets. Over wetting can cause damage to backing and seams, but this will not happen with the proper equipment and a certified trained professional.

What is the difference between a spot and a stain?

A spot is any foreign substance that adds texture to fiber. A stain is anything that adds to or deletes the color of a fiber. Obviously, stains are not easily removed and usually are permanent, whereas spots are more readily cleaned up.

Will steam cleaning or water cleaning damage my oriental rug?

You may be interested to know that many large rug cleaning plants clean oriental, silk, and wool rugs by completely immersing them in a bath of hot water. It's not the water that is bad in the cleaning, it's who does it. There are many factors taken into account for cleaning fringe, preventing color bleeding, proper temperature, etc. to clean your fine rugs and protect your investment. How to Prolong Carpet Life

Your carpets represent a sizable investment. It would make sense to take measures that would extend their life. Most carpet is made of synthetic fibers such as: nylon, olefin, polyester, and some acrylic. These synthetic fibers rarely wear out (except on stairs), instead they ugly out. What we mean by that is, the fibers crush, or mat down, or flatten out. They also abrade or get scratched. Your carpets are made up of thousands upon thousands of very small thread-like fibers that are twisted together. These fibers are basically translucent pieces of plastic. That means that light can pass through them, like a colored Plexiglas. You know how Plexiglas looks after it gets scratched, dull and dirty. Well improperly cared for carpet can look the same. What scratches carpet is gritty soil and sand that is left in the carpet and when it is walked on it rubs against the fibers and scratches them. After so much of this scratching, you can clean the soil and sand out but the damage already done is irreversible and you get is what we call in the carpet cleaning industry ... traffic lane gray. This is where the fibers are clean, but since they are so scratched up they do not reflect the light back to the eyes and now take on a dull appearance which is commonly mistaken for soiled carpets. This usually happens first in the heavily walked on areas or traffic lanes.So the most important thing you can do to improve the appearance life expectancy or your carpet is to:1. Use walk off mats. •Every door into the house should have an outside mat that is rough enough to remove mud and other debris and soil and an inside mat that is absorbent can remove any moisture. The outside mat should be able to withstand the elements and have someplace for the dirt to drop into so that it does not get contaminated and start doing the opposite of what it was intended to do. •The inside mat should be heavy enough to lay flat and have a rubberized back to prevent creeping. These mats should be small and light enough to be able to be washed in your home washing machine and should be cleaned regularly. •Other areas mats that are important: Right off kitchens to prevent cooking oils and foods from being tracked into the carpeted area of your home. Also any area that adjoins to carpeted rooms.2. Vacuum your carpets regularly. •At least twice per week and more often if you have children or pets. •Vacuuming your traffic lanes every day will give you the best protection against premature uglying out of your carpet. 3. Maintain your vacuum cleaner.•Most vacuum cleaners in America today are 70% ineffective, because the bag is over 1/2 full or the bag-less canister is ½ full. After the bag is 1/2 full, the vacuum efficiency is greatly reduced. Once your vacuum cleaner bag is 1/2 full you should change it, and empty the bag-less canister vacuums after each use. •Check the brushes of your vacuum cleaner, when placing a pencil on the base of your power head, the brushes should just touch the pencil and bend slightly as you turn the brush. If it doesn't you could be losing up to 50% efficiency. Adjust or replace the brushes if needed. 4. Remove spots quickly•Most spills can be removed if attended to quickly. The longer a spill stays on the carpet, the greater the chance that damage will take place. •Keep a quality general spotter on hand. Beware of store purchased carpet spot cleaner because they leave soap residue which attracts dirt, or they have a bleaching agent in them and will actually bleach your carpets when the sun hits it or heat from having your carpets cleaned. We have an excellent carpet spotter.•Groom your carpets. Yes, your carpets need to be brushed just like your hair to ensure optimum health. What it does is to pull up or lift the tufts of fibers and make them stand on end. The helps to control matting and crushing, and allows your vacuum cleaner to reach down and get the sand and grit in the base of your carpeting. It has been estimated that grooming prior to vacuuming increases loose soil removal by 23%. 5. Have your carpets professionally 'Steam Cleaned' a minimum of once per year, more often if you have pets or children.•Most people wait until the carpet is visibly soiled before they clean their carpets. This is not wise. What causes the most damage to carpets are the abrasive particles that are stuck to the carpet fibers by oil residues. These oil residues are everywhere and are from the burning of hydrocarbons from motor vehicles factories, power plants and volatilized oils from cooking. They are so small that we usually cannot see them. But they always settle down and land on the largest horizontal surfaces, our carpets! •Once the oil is on the carpet, the soil then sticks to the fibers and no vacuum cleaner can then remove it. •Also regular cleaning helps prevent matting and crushing of carpet by removing the oils that cause fibers to clump together and compress. •When the carpet is so soiled that you can visibly see it then the abrasive soil has been rubbing on the fibers way too long and damage has already occurred. •The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) recommends that carpet in a residential setting be cleaned a minimum of once per year and every 3 to 6 months if children and pets are present. Their reason for the frequency has more to do with maintaining a healthy indoor environment than appearance but it is still good advice. •Keep in mind, frequent cleanings will not only preserve the life of your carpet, it will keep your indoor air clean too. Carpet acts like a filter, by catching pollens, bacteria, and other pollutants as the air circulates through it. That filter (your carpet) has to be cleaned on a regular basis.6. Have your carpets retreated with carpet protector after a through, deep cleaning. The repellent characteristic of carpet protector keeps dirt from sticking to the fibers, making carpets easier to care for. It protects by forming a molecular shield around each carpet fiber. This helps prevent dirt and stains from being ground into or absorbed by the fibers. Ground in dirt and stains can damage your carpet. This helps your carpets look cleaner and fresher longer. It is generally recommended to re-apply carpet protector each time the carpet is cleaned.

How do you avoid rip-offs?

RIP-OFF #1 UNBELIEVABLY LOW PRICE. To some degree, all of us are attracted by low price because we want to work within a budget. But some carpet cleaners use price as the bait for their false and misleading advertising. They offer a cheap price--usually between $3.95 and $9.95 per room--and then, once they are in your home, they pressure you into buying add-ons. It's as if you were buying a car and found out that the dealer was charging extra for the tires and steering wheel. Carpet cleaning is not as cheap as some unethical carpet cleaners would like you to believe. RIP-OFF #2: BAIT AND SWITCH. Dual process carpet cleaning describes the process of shampooing or heavy preconditioning, followed with hot water extraction cleaning. Unfortunately, unethical carpet cleaners often use dual process as a bait and switch technique. Here's how its done: First they bait you with a basic cleaning (single process) at an unbelievably low price. Then, when you call, they try to switch you to the more expensive dual-process cleaning. If you don't fall for their switch and choose their basic service, you'll likely receive poor workmanship using little or no chemicals, and they will not guarantee their work. RIP-OFF #3: OUTDATED BELIEFS, HOT WATER DAMAGES YOUR CARPET. Years ago many people believed this was true because their carpets were damaged by technicians who didn't know how to clean properly using hot water. But today, we know it's false. By washing and then rinsing your carpet with hot water, your carpet is thoroughly cleaned. Obviously, each carpet cleaner will be biased toward their own cleaning method. And each method does have advantages. So I suggest that you look at what the manufacturers have to say. Shaw Industries, the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, recommends hot water extraction for cleaning carpets. Many of the other manufacturers are now making the same recommendation. See what the warranty for your particular carpeting requires in order to keep the warranty in effect.

What are misconceptions about carpet cleaning?

Misconception #1: You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet. NO! Dirt is an abrasive--like sandpaper. Every time you step on your carpet, you grind dirt into the carpet fibers. This cuts your carpet, just as if you had used a knife. This cutting causes your carpet to wear out faster. A dirty carpet will not last as long as a clean carpet. And while vacuuming helps--by itself, it is simply not enough. The longer you wait to have your carpet cleaned, the more damage you do to your carpet and the faster it wears out.MISCONCEPTION #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to remove the dirt. NO! As you probably know, outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, and car exhaust--and hundreds of other chemicals. When you come into your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria, and chemicals in your hair and on your skin, clothing, and shoes. Not surprisingly, all those chemicals and toxins wind up in your carpet. If you have allergies, asthma, emphysema, or other breathing problems--one major source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, smoke, and chemicals in your carpet.MISCONCEPTION #3: One method of carpet cleaning is as good as another. NO! The dry cleaning methods--which are dry foam, dry chemical and dry compound, don't rinse your carpet in any way. Instead, they leave a dirty residue. You might say they clean your carpet only half way. The most effective cleaning method is hot water extraction. By washing and then rinsing your carpet with hot water, your carpet is thoroughly cleaned.MISCONCEPTION #4: Having the right equipment is all a company needs to clean your carpets properly. NO! Not true. Many companies own hot water cleaners but very few companies teach their employees how to use them properly. This is why it's important that you choose your carpet cleaner carefully. The best cleaning companies are those that have been certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, known as the IICRC. Before you choose a carpet cleaner, ask to see written proof of the company's IICRC certification.MISCONCEPTION #5: The company that offers the lowest price is the company you should hire. NO! I've seen so many problems arise from lowest-bid company's that I suggest you NEVER hire a company that quotes the cheapest price. The two most common problems are:1. The price you see advertised may not be the price you pay. Many homeowners have learned that the low price they saw advertised lasted only until the carpet cleaner got to their home. Then they were pressured into paying a lot more for a variety of add ons. Some carpet cleaners even break the law by using illegal bait and switch tactics.2. The price may not be for the services you want performed. The company may only remove the dirt from your carpet. But you want bacteria, fungus, pollens and tobacco residues removed as well.

What to Watch For
1. The rooms are measured wall to wall. Most master bedrooms, family rooms, living rooms, dining rooms, game rooms are larger than 200 sq/ft. So most rooms in a house are really 2 rooms, not 1. To clean a living room, master bedroom and family room really is 6 rooms, not 3 !! At ACR our rooms are 300 sq/ft.. 2. 5 rooms for $64 includes the first 100 square feet of pre-treatment. The ad doesn't tell you how much per square foot it will cost you for more. You will need more. 3. The carpet cleaning prices doesn't include everything. How much more will they charge you to vacuum your carpets (you MUST vacuum your carpets before cleaning them), move furniture, clean spots, neutralize the pre-treatment they put in the carpet, carpet protector?? All this adds up to MUCH more money out of your pocket. 4. Hallways count as a FULL room. 5. Furniture cleaning prices do not include anything that is loose on the furniture. This means that you'll spend more money to get the pillow and cushions cleaned on your furniture.

How to Read Ads - How not to be overcharged

1. The price may be $9.95 per room, but if you look under "Additional Services" you'll notice that they charge a Travel Charge that applies to ALL areas. 2. Again, under "Additional Services" you will notice that spot removal is not included in the price to clean the carpet.3. Also notice the 40% off pet odor removal - if they give you 40% off what they charge you in the first place?4. Now to the fine print, "Pre-conditioning is $.20 per square foot". Without pre-conditioning they aren't actually cleaning the carpet. For an average room, pre-conditioning is going to cost an additional $40-60.5. Again in the fine print, "We highly recommend Carpet protector". This is another way of saying that the carpet cleaning technicians are high pressure sales people in your home who are going to strongly push carpet protector. For an average room, carpet protector is going to cost an additional $60-70.6. You think you're going to get your carpets cleaned for $9.95 a room, but add in pre-conditioner and carpet protector and you are going to pay $110-140 a room PLUS a service charge. This is what we refer to as a bait-n-switch company. They bait you with VERY low prices but then greatly increase the price. At Az Carpet & Restoration, we don't charge extra for ANYTHING. No service charge, no extra fees for spot or stain removal or for carpet protector. You get ALL of it for our one low price.

This ad looks pretty safe and normal, but how about the fine print in the bottom left hand corner? The first thing you'll notice is that carpet protector is not included.
